Make it In a Microwave: Apple Sauce

Fall is a beautiful and nostalgic season. Leaves are falling, people are preparing for the holidays, and of course, apples are in season.

One of the best things to make with the apples is of course, Apple sauce. Most recipes call you to peel several pounds of apples, cut then all up into bits, boil for several  minutes, and it’s just a big mess.

This recipe makes things easier by taking traditional recipes, condensing them down to a single serving size, and utilizing the microwave. This way those without a full kitchen (or college kids who have a few apples they grabbed from the dining hall)can still participate in fall festivities.

2 apples

1/4 c water

.5tbs cinnamon

2.  Cut apples into small pieces 20161010_081239.jpg

3. Place slices in bowl. Add water and cinnamon.

4. Mix all ingredients then microwave for 2 minutes.

5. Check apple pieces. If they are squishy and not crunchy, they are done.

6. Take a potato masher, bottom of a cup, or what ever you have, mashe the apple slices until the desired consistency.

7. Enjoy warm or chill for later.20161011_195427.jpg

Young Living: More than Just Oils

When people think Essential oils, they think of diffusers, lemon scents, homemade lotions. Which, to be fair, is the majority of essential oil companies.

Young Living Essential Oils started out in 1993 will a small ogranic farming operation by Gary and Mary Young. Business was starting to rise, so in 1994 they established the business. Staying focused on there goal to use only the purest ingredients, they formed  a new process to help maintain that goal, called: Seed to Seal®, which is not just what they label their production process, but also their committment to being sustainable. In addition Young LivingEssential oils lists all of the farms that they source their ingredients from right on the website! This obvious commitment to the planet has cought the eye of consumers everywhere,  and now they are a widely popular essential oils company.

One such Essential oil blend product is the Thieves oil. it is a blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, radiata, and rosemary. The story behind this amazing blend is very interesting. This blend actually was derived from a blend that French thieves used while robbing the dead in the 15th century.

This oil blend is not just for aromatic purposes, you can injest it by placing a small amount in a capsule(2 drops with 8 drops of carrier oil), or add it to your smoothies, banana icecream, or even add it to the companies own Ningxia drink.

What is Ningxia? Well,  Ningxia Red is a liquid energy blend containg juices from major superfoods, included but not limited to: aronia, plum, blueberry. In addition, it contains several fruit oils to help keep you balanced. According to their website, the health benefits of taking this are not just increased energy, but “… normal eye health, cellular function...”

Looking for more ways to add essential oils to your own food, but dont know how to include the essential oils? Young Living has that covered. On their website are videos for cooking a variety of goodies, like the Guilt Free Peppermint Brownies . A very tasty way to give your body the healing ingredients it needs.

College Hacks for Health: Dunkin Donuts

Every college kid does it. Thats right, the morning ‘Im gonna be late but yolo’ run to dunkin donuts before class.

There is no avoiding it, its just part of college tradition.

While you may be singing sad Nickleback songs in your head because you eat healthy?  Well rejoice and switch your playlist over the Justin Beiber because I have news for you!

The menu has been healthy hacked, and you can be a proper college kid, and do the dunkin run like the greats.

Here is the line up, starting with drinks. All of these are the lowest in sugar and fats, while still providing a high level of caffeine. When researching the nutrition facts, I recorded the large sizes(minus tea, which will have a negligable difference in sodium) so that you wont worry about what size to get. Go big or go home. Unincluded are the hot versions of regular coffee, which will have relatively the same amount of nutrition, provided that you skip the sugar.

Item Total Fat Sodium Total Carb Fiber Sugar Protein Vitamins
Iced Coffee 1gram 15 3 0 0 1 none
Iced Coffee with Almond Milk 1gram 75 9 0 6 1 vitaminA(4%), calcium(10%)
Iced Coffee with Milk 2 gram 45 6 0 3 3 vitamin A(2%), Calcium(8%)
Black Tea/green Tea 0gram 15 0 0 0 0 none

I cant kid myself, if youre going to dunkin donuts, there is a high chance that youll cave and get the donut. However, armed with that knowledge, I cherry picked the donuts/baked gooods lowest in fat, sodium, and most importantly, sugar( 10 grams or less). So this way, you dont have to fall completely off track! The muffin, bagel and croissant were calculated as plain, no spreads.

Item Total Fat Sodium Total Carb Fiber Sugar Protein Vitamins

As you can see, the name ‘Dunkin Donuts’ can be misleading. Despite a common misconception, it does actually have healthy foods, and does not need to be avoided! Dont go over-zealous and eliminate certain restaurants. going there will not make you unhealthy, its the food choices that really matter.

Breath, and enjoy life. Enjoy food. Eat Dunkin Donuts.
